Beauty IS eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.

Hi love!

As a makeup artist I take great pride in the products I own and put on display for my clients. I know many of you may not have seen the post on Facebook regarding my new makeup station but a lot of thought goes into organizing a collection; especially when you’re as anal about ‘the details’ as I am.

And while displaying name brands are impressive, packing every single shade of lipstick in your makeup kit just isn’t practical. When you’re on the go and in a pinch, it is just as impressive—and important—to know how to mix a shade of lipstick using a cream palette.

Not a makeup artist? Don’t own a cream palette? No worries. Today’s how-to will have you mixing tubes of lipsticks like a pro! So let’s get started.

Dark lipsticks are a hot topic for Fall so I’ve decided to replicate Dolce & Gabbana’s Classic Cream Lipstick in Amethyst using my Make Up For Ever Flash palette.

The process really is quite simple but first things first.

Here is what you will need to do this at home:

If you don’t own these items it’s ok. In place of the spatula, use a butter knife and instead of the mixing palette, use a plate—but only if this is for your own personal use.

If you are training to become a makeup artist or you give family and friends makeovers as a hobby, by all means, add these sanitary items to your shopping list. They are a must have and I’ve attached direct links for purchase to the images for your convenience.

How-To:

In order to match D&G’s Amethyst, I needed to get a good sample of it on my mixing palette (as shown on the left). And as you can see, the cranberry raisin color is a good blend of red, purple and brown. But I can’t just mix Make Up For Ever’s Red 024 with Bright Blue 014 because it’d give me a grape color and I need a cranberry shade.

So I first mixed Red 024 with Fuchsia 025 (doing my best to take equal amounts of both) to tone down the blue undertones of Red 024. I then went in with Bright Blue 014 for a deep purple shade. But it wasn’t quite raisin enough. So I added Brown 023 until the swatch matched that of D&G’s.

And there you have it! Mixing your own shade of brand name lipstick using a cream palette really is that simple.

How-To: Dolce & Gabbana Amethyst Lipstick

I just received this pretty little lady in the mail and am so excited to give it a try. I know Tamanna worked hard on this Fall/Holiday palette (in collaboration with Anastasia Beverly Hills) and I am happy to support her in any way that I can.

With that said, at first glance I thought the palette looked similar to the Maya Mia palette which was released in late August. Though there are subtle differences.

While both palettes have a highlight, neutral transition shades, a coral and turquoise eye shadow, the Tamanna shades have a warm yet muted (remember, the palette was designed with Fall in mind) tone to them; versus the warmer, summery shades of the Maya Mia palette (pictured below). For example: Tamanna’s turquoise is more of a robin egg blue and her coral carries a hint of rose. Whereas Maya Mia’s turquoise and coral shadows were inspired by the clear waters and desert sands of Tanzania.

In addition to the slight differences in tone, the majority of eye shadows in the Tamanna palette are satin or metallic; leaving only three shades matte: Fresh, Chocolate and Noir. Whereas the Maya Mia palette is the complete opposite. All but three of her eye shadows are matte, which I prefer.

To be perfectly honest with you, this isn’t a ‘one palette is better than the other’ review. I love them equally, or else I wouldn’t have purchased them or bothered to share them with you.

The Anastasia Beverly Hills palettes are beautiful and I’m happy to have them both (and any future palettes) in my makeup collection. They’re highly pigmented and easy to blend, with little to no fall-out. The packaging is impressive and unique to each of the artists they’re designed after. So no two palettes will ever truly be the same. Which makes these beauties a HOT item!

I have to admit that the Electric palette was—is—and may always be my absolute favorite purchase. I may just cry if this ever gets discontinued because I find any and every reason to use ONE (if not more) of these gorgeous eye shadows on my clients. The silver shade, called Revolt, gets used on the regular (as a highlight for the inner corner of the eye). It’s super shimmery and metallic. It’s hands-down my favorite pop of glamour! But again, there isn’t a shadow in this palette I don’t like. Each lives up to it’s name: ELECTRIC! They’re super rich in color, highly pigmented, with little to no fall-out and the perfect compliment to any seasonal look.

So, yes. The next time you’re strolling through Sephora and you stop to wonder if this is worth the purchase, the answer is a resounding yes! Do not hesitate. Do not go past go. Do not let this palette get away. Because the last thing you want is to be haunted at night by the purchase that could have been!

I’m just sayin.

Now this pretty palette gets used. And by used, I mean I-don’t-dare-leave-home-without-it. I’m not sure what it is about this palette but it goes wherever I go. And now that I’m thinking about it, I get a sense that NARS built this palette with every eye color in mind. Not to mention, for every occasion! I’ve used this palette for bridal makeup and smokey eyes. And even if a color isn’t as deep or as warm as I need it to be, this palette is perfect for mixing colors. The only thing I wish Narsissist had more of is matte eye shadows. But that’s just me.

I also use this Too Faced palette for bridal and boudoir makeup. I like the soft brown shades. They’re easy to layer and blend. I also happen to think they photograph well. And even though these shades were created to mimic Summer, I think it’s just as easily a Fall color palette. The shimmer is kept to a minimum, which makes this palette ideal for a day-to-night transition.

Last but not least, the ever popular Naked 2 and 3 palettes. You know, to be honest I bought the Naked 2 palette because it was all everyone was talking about. So I splurged (at the time I wasn’t used to dropping $$ on palettes) and found myself a little disappointed. There were just too many metallic eye shadows for my liking. The output of color wasn’t what I wanted and the shades were just too similar in tone.

But again, everyone on social media loved this palette. Instagram was flooded with #motd and #eotd looks using Naked 2 and 3. So naturally I thought something was wrong with me. Like there was some super duper, secret makeup artist trick I wasn’t aware of. So I caved and bought Naked 3.

Now—pink is my least favorite color. It doesn’t do well on my olive skin so I avoid it as often as possible. Which isn’t so easy to do when the entire palette is pink based, but I believed it was a must-have because people were raving about it.

Needless to say, you should’t always believe the hype.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Urban Decay. I just happen to love their Electric palette over the Naked series. And again, that’s just me. These may very well suit your needs. But as much as I love glitz & glam, I do prefer my eye shadows to be more matte.

I do notice more fall-out on these palettes compared to those listed above but it’s makeup. It’s art. It’s meant to get a little outside the lines, now and again!

I do hope you find today’s post helpful in some way. If you have a must-have palette that’s not mentioned here or have thoughts you’d like to share on either of the palette’s above, please feel free to comment below! I’d love to know what’s working for you!

I have plenty of more reviews planned so stay tuned. And if you liked today’s post please don’t forget to subscribe, like it or share the blog with your friends!

Until next time,
